VR Education Toolkit – My HackIllinois 2018 entry and Fulcrum GT prize winner
Me and my team (David Hickox, Alchaeus Lam, and Luke Stumpf) built a VR Education toolkit to allow educators to easily create VR educational experiences without any coding or 3D modeling experience in 36 hours at HackIllinois 2018. This toolkit provides a framework as well as resources for educators to create VR lessons with.
Precreated Unity scenes can be modified by content creators to suit their lesson with new assets and 360 videos or new scenes can be easily made with provided prefabs and models from Google Poly. It includes two example scenes, one of a science classroom setup with a science experiment, and another scene with a 360 degree video that transitions into a classroom with objects from the video.
I led the team and worked on the core framework, VR interaction, and some level design, as well as managed our GitHub repo and DevPost.
We used many technologies in this project, including Unity, Probuilder, VR Toolkit, and Google Poly. Our project was built for GearVR since that is what we had access to at the contest, but it could be easily ported to many other platforms, including Google Daydream, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
We got to present a live demo in the closing ceremony, and won the prize from title sponsor Fulcrum GT called Taking your Dog Food to Market for best commercial viability of an open source project.
